OpenAI launches Prism, an AI workspace for scientists

OpenAI has launched Prism, a free workspace that integrates GPT-5.2 into scientific writing and collaboration. Anyone with a personal ChatGPT account can use it starting today, with unlimited projects and collaborators.
The tool addresses a very specific problem: day-to-day research work is still spread across text editors, PDF files, LaTeX compilers, reference managers and separate chats. Every switch between applications costs context and time.
An AI-powered scientific writing tool
Prism brings drafting, review, collaboration and manuscript preparation for publication into a single environment. It is built on LaTeX, a system commonly used in science to create documents with equations, references and figures, but it runs in the cloud: you do not need to install LaTeX or configure a local environment.
The main difference is that GPT-5.2 works inside the project, rather than as an isolated chat. It can access the paper's full structure, equations, citations, figures and related text. That lets you request changes with the entire document in context, instead of copying fragments back and forth.
Its features include:
- Exploring ideas, testing hypotheses and reasoning through complex scientific problems with

- Searching relevant literature, for example on arXiv, and adding it to the manuscript's context.
- Creating and reorganizing equations, citations and figures.
- Converting equations or diagrams drawn on a whiteboard directly into LaTeX code.
- Editing the document in the same place, without switching between an editor and a chat.
- Using voice editing for simple adjustments.
The platform also lets coauthors, students and supervisors work together in real time. Changes, comments and revisions appear immediately, and there are no limits on the number of collaborators.
What changes for researchers
In practice, Prism does not make research move forward on its own. It reduces the mechanical tasks that consume hours: fixing the formatting of an equation, finding a reference, merging file versions or turning an outline into a usable figure.
For example, a researcher can ask for an argument to be reviewed in light of the paper's citations, or turn a handwritten equation into LaTeX without reconstructing it character by character. The goal is to spend more time on scientific content and less time managing files and tools.
OpenAI built Prism on Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform it acquired and transformed into this new product. The announced features are available for free to users with personal ChatGPT accounts. Business, Enterprise and Education plans will receive access soon, while some more advanced features will be available through paid plans.
The broader direction is clear: AI can do more than help discover patterns or analyze experiments. It can also fit into the routine tasks that support research. Prism is one of OpenAI's first attempts to bring that assistance directly into the space where scientific results are written and reviewed.
