OpenAI brings Instacart into chat for AI-powered shopping

OpenAI is integrating Instacart into ChatGPT so users can search for groceries, create a cart and check out without leaving the conversation. The experience connects AI suggestions with the purchase and delivery of products from local stores.

OpenAI is integrating Instacart into ChatGPT so you can go from a dinner idea to a grocery cart and checkout without leaving the conversation.

The partnership makes Instacart the first app with shopping and checkout integrated directly into ChatGPT. The experience is powered by OpenAI Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a standard designed to let AI agents interact with commercial services.

How it works

You can write something like “Help me buy the ingredients for an apple pie on Instacart.” ChatGPT will display the app and may suggest it when you talk about recipes, food or meal ideas.

After you sign in with your Instacart account, the app will search for products available at nearby stores and prepare a cart for you to review. OpenAI models help interpret your request and find the right items.

Checkout also takes place inside the Instacart app in ChatGPT. You do not have to switch tabs or copy a product list from one service to another. Once the purchase is complete, Instacart assigns someone to pick up the order and deliver it through its usual platform.

The final decision is still yours: you can review the cart, change quantities, replace products and confirm payment before the order is processed.

What changes for you

Until now, asking an AI for a recipe and buying its ingredients were two separate steps. With this integration, ChatGPT can connect the recommendation to a concrete action: create a list, find the products and have them delivered to your home.

That is especially useful for everyday tasks such as these:

  • Create a cart from a recipe.
  • Find alternatives if a product is unavailable.
  • Buy ingredients for several meals.
  • Turn a general idea, such as “five days of quick dinners,” into a list you can review.

The convenience depends on several factors. Instacart needs to be available in your area, you will need an account, and products, prices and delivery times will depend on local stores. ChatGPT can prepare the cart, but it does not remove those service conditions.

A partnership that was already underway

The integration is not starting from scratch. Instacart was one of the first partners in the Operator research program, OpenAI’s agent designed to perform tasks on websites, and provided feedback on its use in real-world situations.

The company also uses OpenAI APIs alongside its own systems to provide personalized recommendations and help customers decide what to buy. Within the company, it uses ChatGPT Enterprise for some workflows and Codex as an internal programming agent.

The announcement shows where OpenAI wants to take ChatGPT: from answering questions to carrying out tasks connected to real services. The important part is not just that AI can suggest a recipe, but that it can help you complete the next step without forcing you to start over in another app.

What to watch now is how this model expands to other services and who controls each part of the operation: the recommendation, price, payment and delivery. Buying groceries from a chat can save time, but it also makes it more important to check what the AI has selected before confirming the order.
