OpenAI acquires Sky to bring AI to macOS

OpenAI is acquiring Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, an AI interface for Mac that can understand what appears on your screen and act within your applications.

The deal brings Sky’s entire team to OpenAI. The company will integrate its technology and macOS expertise into ChatGPT, although it has not yet announced when those features will be available or under what conditions.

AI that works inside your applications

Sky works as an AI layer over the Mac desktop. Rather than simply answering questions in a chat window, it can use the context of what you are doing to help you write, plan, code or manage tasks.

For example, it could interpret the content you have open and help you draft a message, organize information or perform actions through installed applications. The difference is that the AI does not just receive an isolated instruction: it can also take your screen and the workflow you are in into account.

OpenAI presents this integration as a step toward moving ChatGPT from answering instructions to helping complete tasks directly in the tools you already use. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, says Sky’s integration with Mac brings that vision closer.

What changes for you

For now, the acquisition does not mean that Sky is already integrated into ChatGPT. OpenAI has only said that it will work on incorporating its capabilities and provide more details soon.

If the plan takes shape, ChatGPT could interact more directly with computer programs instead of making you copy and paste information between applications. That could enable uses such as:

• Drafting a document based on files or windows you have open.
• Turning a plan into tasks within your applications.
• Helping you code while you work in a code editor.
• Automating repetitive actions on the desktop.

These kinds of features also raise important questions about permissions and privacy. An AI that can see your screen and act within your applications needs clear limits: what information it can read, what actions it can perform and when it must ask for your confirmation.

The deal includes a financial relationship involving Sam Altman

OpenAI has said that an investment fund linked to Sam Altman, its chief executive, held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated. The acquisition was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo and approved by the independent Transaction and Audit Committees of OpenAI’s board.

The company has not disclosed the acquisition price. It has also not detailed which Sky features will reach ChatGPT first or whether they will be available to all users.

What matters now is the real-world integration. Sky’s value will depend not only on whether ChatGPT can understand your screen, but also on whether it can act accurately, ask for permission when appropriate and avoid mistakes inside the applications you use every day.
