Google renames NotebookLM as Gemini Notebook
NotebookLM is being renamed Gemini Notebook and integrated with the Gemini app, with plans to bring it to Google Search’s AI Mode. Google is also adding a secure cloud computer for running code and analyzing documents, though the feature is rolling out in phases depending on account type.
Google is renaming NotebookLM Gemini Notebook and expanding its presence across its products. The tool will continue to work as an independent research space, but it will also integrate with the Gemini app and, soon, Google Search’s AI Mode.
NotebookLM launched in 2023 as Project Tailwind with a specific goal: helping you learn and work from your own documents. Since then, more than 30 million people and 600,000 organizations have used it to create training materials, summarize notes, and turn information into audio and video formats.
The name change does not remove NotebookLM or turn it into a different tool. Gemini Notebook keeps its source-based research focus, but it is now more closely connected to Google’s ecosystem.
A cloud computer for analyzing your sources
The main technical update adds a secure cloud computer to each notebook. In practice, Gemini Notebook can write and run code to analyze data directly from the documents you have added.
This makes more complex tasks possible, such as comparing large tables, detecting patterns, or generating analyses that would be difficult to get from a conventional summary. The important difference is that the analysis remains grounded in your sources, rather than relying only on the model’s general knowledge.
This feature is already available to:
- Google AI Ultra users.
- Google Workspace enterprise customers with AI Ultra Access.
- Enterprise customers with AI Expanded Access.
Google says it will reach all Pro users on the web version over the next few weeks. The company also says this capability will enable new output formats and more in-depth analysis.
Your notebooks will be available in Gemini and Search
You can already create and open notebooks directly from the Gemini app. Changes sync between the app and the standalone Gemini Notebook experience, so you do not need to maintain two versions of your research.
The next step will be bringing notebooks to Google Search’s AI Mode. This points to a more direct connection between searching for information online and then organizing it in your own space to study, compare, or convert it into another format.
For you, the most visible change is that NotebookLM is no longer a relatively isolated tool. You will be able to start research in Search, continue it in Gemini, and work with the same materials from Gemini Notebook. The code-based analysis feature, however, currently depends on your account type and will expand gradually.
The change confirms Google’s strategy: bringing its research tools together around Gemini without abandoning NotebookLM’s dedicated experience. What remains to be seen is how well that connection between products works and when the more advanced analysis capabilities reach all users.
