Gemini automates everyday tasks on Android

Google is preparing a feature that will let Gemini complete multistep tasks on your Android phone, such as booking a ride home or reordering your last meal, while you continue using your phone.

The feature will soon arrive as a beta in the Gemini app on the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S26 series. At first, it will be available only in the United States and South Korea.

To activate it, you will need to press and hold the power button and ask Gemini to do something. For example, you could ask it to book a ride or reorder your usual food from DoorDash. Gemini will open and operate the required app in the background, so you will not have to complete every step manually.

This does not mean giving Gemini full control of your phone. Google has designed this first version with several limits:

• The task starts with your instruction and ends when it is complete.
• You can follow the process live through notifications, intervene, or stop it at any time.
• Gemini works inside a secure virtual window, so it can access only certain compatible apps, not the rest of the device.

The beta will start with a small group of apps across three categories:

• Food delivery
• Product and grocery shopping
• Ride-hailing services

That means you will not yet be able to ask it to do anything in any app. Its usefulness will depend on which services are compatible and how those services handle their own security controls.

What changes for you

Until now, an AI assistant could tell you how to book a ride or take you to an app. With this feature, the idea is that it will also carry out the steps: open the service, choose an option, and complete the order according to your instructions.

The difference may seem small, but it removes repetitive tasks. If you often order the same food, buy the same products, or request a ride through the same services, you could delegate part of that process without giving AI unlimited control of your phone.

The key question will be whether Gemini understands your instructions correctly and knows when to ask for confirmation. Choosing the wrong address, restaurant, or product could turn a convenience into a problem.

Google presents this feature as an initial test and expects to gather feedback before expanding its availability. For now, you will need to watch which apps are added, which actions require approval, and how far the automation goes without compromising user control.
