Gemini arrives on Android Auto with personalized assistance

Gemini is rolling out globally on Android Auto and will arrive in cars with Google built-in. With Personal Intelligence, it can access Gmail, Calendar, Photos, and Maps data, if you authorize it, to provide personalized responses while you drive.

Gemini is now available globally on Android Auto and in cars with Google built-in to help you while you drive. You can talk to the assistant naturally, ask for directions, get answers to questions, or retrieve information without taking your hands off the wheel.

The most significant addition is Personal Intelligence, a feature that connects Gemini, with your permission, to information from the Google apps you already use: Gmail and Calendar in Workspace, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Search.

Fewer searches, more context

Gemini does more than answer general questions. It can also find specific details in your emails, photos, or saved places and cross-reference information from multiple sources to handle a complete request.

For example, while you’re heading to the airport, you can say: “What’s my flight gate, and is it on time?” Gemini can check your booking details and the flight status without making you search for the confirmation email first and then run a separate query.

You can also ask it to find a covered restaurant along your route that matches your usual preferences. If you’re vegetarian, it can take that into account when suggesting options.

The idea is that you won’t have to remember addresses or explain the full context. You can say:

  • “Take me to my doctor’s appointment” to start navigation to an event in your calendar.
  • “Find the car wash in the photo I took last week and take me there” to locate a place from an image.
  • “Take me to the café we were talking about yesterday” to pick up a conversation and turn it into a destination.

The feature is optional

Your apps aren’t connected automatically. Personal Intelligence only activates if you authorize it, and you can turn it off at any time in Gemini settings.

In cars with Google built-in, personalized responses are only shared when you’re inside the vehicle and your phone is connected. If you don’t activate this feature, the rest of the services remain available: navigation, music, calls, and general questions. The difference is that responses won’t use your personal data to adapt to you.

When you can use it

Personal Intelligence is starting to roll out on Android Auto and will arrive in cars with Google built-in over the next few months. If you’ve already activated it in the Gemini app, the setting will also apply when you use the assistant in your car.

In practice, the change isn’t about adding another screen to the dashboard. It’s about reducing the number of steps you need to take while driving. The important thing will be to see which information each user connects and how Gemini responds when a request combines calendar, email, photos, and maps. That will show whether personalization actually saves time or simply adds another layer of complexity.
