ChatGPT launches direct AI shopping on Etsy
OpenAI is enabling Instant Checkout so ChatGPT users in the United States can buy products from Etsy sellers without leaving the chat. The feature uses a new open protocol developed with Stripe and will soon reach more than one million Shopify merchants.

OpenAI now lets you buy some products without leaving ChatGPT. The feature, called Instant Checkout, starts with Etsy sellers in the United States and is available to Free, Plus and Pro users.
The experience turns ChatGPT into more than a product search engine. You can ask for running shoes under 100 dollars, for example, or a gift for someone who enjoys ceramics. If a product supports Instant Checkout, you can review it, confirm the shipping details and pay within the conversation.
For now, the feature only allows you to buy one item per transaction. OpenAI plans to add carts with multiple products, more retailers and new regions.
How shopping inside the chat works
ChatGPT will continue showing products from different stores when you make a shopping query. OpenAI says those results are organic and unsponsored: they are ranked according to how relevant they are to your search, not because a store paid to appear first.
When you find a compatible product, you can tap the purchase button and confirm:
- The item and quantity.
- The shipping address.
- The payment method.
Users with a card saved in ChatGPT can use it, although other cards and fast payment methods are also supported. Before completing the transaction, you must confirm each step.
The store still handles everything else. The retailer processes the payment, prepares the order, manages shipping and handles returns or problems. ChatGPT acts as an intermediary, much like a personal assistant that passes your instructions on to the store.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol
The technology connecting ChatGPT with retailers is called Agentic Commerce Protocol. It is an open standard that allows an AI agent, a person and a business to coordinate a purchase.
OpenAI developed it with Stripe and several retailers, and has published the protocol and its documentation so other developers can integrate it. The idea is that a store should not have to replace its existing systems to sell through AI agents.
According to OpenAI, retailers that already use Stripe could activate agent payments with a one-line code integration. Those working with other processors can also participate through Stripe's tools or the protocol's own specifications.
What changes for stores
More than one million Shopify merchants, including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori, will soon join Instant Checkout. Etsy is the first major group of sellers available in this launch.
The retailer keeps the customer relationship and remains legally responsible for the sale. It also retains control over payments, inventory, shipping, customer service and returns.
Stores pay a small commission for each completed purchase. That cost is not charged to the user, should not change the product price and, according to OpenAI, does not give an item a better position in search results.
When choosing between several stores selling the same product, ChatGPT also considers factors such as price, availability, quality, who the primary seller is and whether direct purchasing is enabled. Instant Checkout is one of those factors, but not the only one.
The important part: control and data
OpenAI says payments use encrypted tokens authorized for a specific retailer and amount. The store also receives only the information needed to complete the order, and only with the user's permission.
That reduces the risk of an agent buying something on its own or reusing payment details outside the authorized transaction. At this early stage, purchasing is not fully autonomous: you must approve it before it goes through.
For you, the change is simple but relevant: searching for a product and buying it are starting to happen in the same place. The next thing to watch is whether OpenAI can expand this experience to more countries, stores and multi-item purchases without losing transparency around prices, sellers and how your data is used.
