ChatGPT Health brings AI to your medical data

OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Health, a separate space within ChatGPT that connects medical records, wellness apps, and personal files. The tool helps you understand health data and prepare for appointments, with additional privacy protections, but it is not designed to diagnose conditions or replace doctors.

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Health, a separate space within ChatGPT that lets you connect your medical and wellness data to get answers tailored more closely to your situation. The tool can help you understand test results, prepare for a medical appointment, or spot patterns in your health habits.

The difference from a regular chat is that Health can work with information normally spread across medical portals, apps, PDF files, and devices such as smartwatches. Everything is brought together in a dedicated space with additional privacy controls.

What you can do with ChatGPT Health

You can upload documents or connect compatible services to get help with specific tasks, such as:

  • Summarizing your latest blood tests before an appointment.
  • Understanding what certain results mean in plain language.
  • Preparing questions for your doctor.
  • Reviewing trends in sleep, physical activity, or diet.
  • Creating meal ideas and exercise routines based on your goals.
  • Comparing insurance options based on your healthcare patterns.

The first integrations include medical records, Apple Health, Function, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, AllTrails, Instacart, and Peloton. Some features depend on the country. Connecting to Apple Health, for example, requires an iPhone, while medical records and certain apps are available only in the United States.

Connected information is not automatically used in the rest of your conversations. Health has its own chats, files, and memories, separate from the ones you keep in ChatGPT. You can view or delete those memories whenever you want from Health or from your personalization settings.

There is one limited exception: ChatGPT may use context from your regular conversations, such as a change of city or routine, if it believes that will help it respond better. But data and memories created in Health do not flow back into your general chats, and those chats cannot access them.

More protection for sensitive data

OpenAI says Health conversations are not used to train its main models. In addition to ChatGPT's standard encryption, the new space adds further encryption and isolation measures to keep health information separate.

You can also enable multifactor authentication to make unauthorized access more difficult. Apps connect only with your explicit permission, even if they are already linked to ChatGPT outside Health, and you can disconnect them at any time.

To access medical records from US providers, OpenAI works with b.well, a network that connects consumer health data in the United States. When you link an app, Health shows what types of data the third party may collect and limits access to the information it needs, according to OpenAI.

Designed to support your doctor, not replace them

Health is not designed to diagnose diseases or recommend treatments. Its purpose is to help you better understand your information and arrive more prepared for a conversation with a healthcare professional.

OpenAI says it developed the tool over more than two years with more than 260 doctors from 60 countries and several specialties. That group reviewed model responses more than 600,000 times across 30 evaluation areas.

The company also created HealthBench, a system that evaluates responses using criteria written by doctors. It does not measure only whether an answer is correct. It also checks whether it explains things clearly, recognizes when you should consult a professional, and takes each person's context into account.

When it will be available

The launch begins with a small group of users to test and improve the experience. Users on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans who are outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom can access it.

OpenAI plans to expand access to all users on the web and iOS over the coming weeks. The availability of each integration will vary by region and connected service.

For you, the main change is that ChatGPT can move from answering general health questions to working with some of your own information. That may save time when organizing documents and preparing for appointments, but it does not remove the need to review the results with a professional. What matters will be watching how the connections expand and how much control Health provides over data that, by its nature, requires more care than a typical conversation.
