ChatGPT connects to your company's internal knowledge

ChatGPT can now search for answers in your company's internal tools and bring them together in a single response, with citations showing where each piece of data came from. The feature is called company knowledge and is coming to Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans.

The idea is to solve an everyday problem: the information you need to do your work is usually scattered across documents, emails, messages, tickets, and project management tools. Finding it means opening several applications and piecing the context together yourself.

With company knowledge, ChatGPT can search connected tools such as Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, and GitHub. OpenAI says the feature uses a version of GPT-5 designed to search across multiple sources and provide more complete and accurate answers.

What it can do for you

Imagine you have a call with a client. Instead of reviewing conversations and files one by one, you can ask ChatGPT for a briefing that combines:

• Recent messages from your account's Slack channel.
• Key details from emails with the client.
• Notes from the latest call in Google Docs.
• Open issues in Intercom support tickets.

The response includes the sources used and the specific passages it relies on. You can open each citation to check the original context. You can also follow what the system is searching through the sidebar while it works.

It does not just find one match and copy it. It can run multiple searches to compare data, identify contradictions, and summarize different positions. If you ask what decision the company made about its goals for next year, for example, it can gather what was discussed and point out that different opinions still exist.

It can also filter by date. That lets you ask for a recent update on the company's performance or retrieve what things looked like during the first quarter, without manually searching through old files and past conversations.

Specific use cases

The feature is designed for tasks that normally require gathering information before you can begin:

• Analyze customer feedback: combines Slack messages, survey results, presentations, and support tickets to identify problems and guide product planning.
• Prepare campaign reports: brings together contacts and deals from HubSpot, performance documents, post-campaign notes, and relevant emails.
• Plan launches: reviews GitHub repositories, Linear tasks, and engineering team conversations to find outstanding bugs and work that has not yet been documented.

The practical change is that you no longer have to explain from scratch which project you are working on. ChatGPT can access that context directly, as long as the relevant application is connected.

Your company's permissions still apply

Company knowledge does not give ChatGPT general access to every file in the organization. It respects existing permissions: each user can only receive information they were already authorized to access.

OpenAI says it does not use company data to train its models by default. In Enterprise and Edu, administrators can also control which applications are available, create group-based permissions, and manage access through tools such as SSO, SCIM, and allowed IP address lists.

Organizations can access conversation logs through the Enterprise Compliance API for auditing and regulatory compliance. Data is protected with industry-standard encryption.

It still has limits

To use the feature, you must select it manually when starting a conversation and connect your work applications the first time. If you do not activate it, ChatGPT can still use some connected applications, but its responses will not have the same level of depth or detailed citations.

While company knowledge is active, ChatGPT cannot search the web or create charts or images. You can turn it off within the same conversation and keep the context, but for now it cannot combine all of these capabilities at once.

OpenAI says it plans to integrate this feature with the rest of ChatGPT's tools in the coming months and add more connectors. Newly announced support includes Asana, GitLab Issues, and ClickUp.

The important point is not that ChatGPT can read more applications, but that it is starting to work as a search layer over the work you already do. The next thing to watch is whether its citations and permission controls are sufficient for companies to trust it with real information, not just isolated documents.
